Which is more expensive? Durians or abalone? Obviously you know the answer.
What if I told you that durians… are actually more expensive than abalone right now?
Preposterous? Absurd? Ridiculous? That’s what I feel too, but apparently things did get to that state.
Just a few weeks ago, durian prices skyrocketed to an astonishing 33-year high, and the scary thing is that it’s not even stopping yet.
According to Lianhe Wanbao, a Chinese Newspaper in Singapore, one kg of Mao Shan Wang could cost more than $40!
It even got to a point where the sellers themselves admit that the fruit might have become overpriced.

Two durian sellers from Lorong 27, Geylang, and Toa Payoh Lorong 8, reportedly said that the prices for Mao Shan Wang has reached S$45 a kg, a record number in Singapore.
The Toa Payoh vendor’s been selling fruits for over 50 years, but this was the first time that he saw such rates. Just the previous year, one kg of Mao Shan Wang was going for only $18 to $20!
The Geylang Vendor began a comparison between Malaysia and Singapore, stating that one kg of Mao Shan Wang purchased directly from Malaysia costs about RM 80 to RM 90 (around S$30). Locally it goes for about S$45, so it’s not really unreasonable already.
The reason the durians spiked so high in prices is actually really simple: demand over supply. Add in an increase in export fee to China, Hong Kong and other countries, and you get the current inflated rates.
It looks like the local Singaporeans have started to feel the pinch too; according to the vendors, local customers have deceased, and customers this year are mostly foreign tourists.
Chinese tourists don’t mind though. In China, a durian could cost up to $40 a kg, so it’s roughly the same.
What about you? Would you continue buying durians at these absurd rates?
Or would you leave behind your durian addiction and forego it altogether?
