Former acquaintances and neighbors of the man have stepped out to give their views on the family problems that resulted in the death of Mr Spencer Tuppani Shamlal Tuppani at the hands of his 69 year-old father-in-law.
According to a lady friend of the deceased, the Indonesian Chinese victim was a wealthy Maritime Logistics tycoon, who had at one point been rich enough to invest in his own “Hanging Flower” nightclub at Kim Seng Road 20 years ago. “Hanging Flower Joints” are a Mandarin euphemism for nightclubs where singers sing in return for gratuities in the from of paid flowers and drinks
Some time later, he started another Hanging Flower joint at the neighboring New World, before finally setting up a third nightclub at Shenton Way. The clubs were successful for a period of time, with many singers signing up to work at his nightclubs. Because of his businesses, his Facebook friends were mostly attractive female singers.
The clubs were closed 10 years ago due to the poor economic conditions.
When asked whether Mr Spencer’s operating a nightclub had been a reason for his family problems, the lady friend explained that Mr Spencer’s wife had often visited the nightclubs and helped to run the business. Although the couple never brought their 3 daughters to the clubs, she could tell that Mr Spencer loved them deeply and was always talking about them.
Being an avid dancer, Mr Spencer was constantly teaching and inviting people to dance, his lady friend revealed. She said that before his death, Mr Spencer often met with friends to participate in weekend dance parties.
